BACKGROUND

Larus comes from Solstrond, a place known for its cold weather and fish exports and had a relatively normal childhood growing up. He has a twin sister, Sofie, and she is the only one he's really close to besides his friend Egil; his parents aren't exactly the, well, parental type. But his entire "normal" life changed upon moving to the Dusk in his late teens.

The Dusk is the central most point of the world, a melting pot of cultures and the supernatural, and it's also the base for an organization known as The Factory. While police and other types of law enforcement exist, so does The Factory. Yet, they're solely there to restrict and constrain the supernatural through whatever means they feel is necessary. The Factory itself is comprised of supernatural individuals since normal humans wouldn't be able to successfully constrain supernaturals in ways that their own kind could. Connections to The Factory are better within the city itself, and as an ardent supporter, Larus' father brought them to Duskpoint not too long after where they settled into the richer area of Valmont.

Making friends isn't quite so easy when the only one he cares about – aside from his sister – is far up north, but Larus acclimates quickly nonetheless. Life is much the same – loud, drawn out, busy – until he's introduced Audo aka "Sun" through his budding friendship with Luna, a girl he'd met in the District. Sun is the first vampire Larus ever meets, and though his mother has always voiced her distaste of vampires and other supernaturals quite loudly, it doesn't keep Larus from falling into the shadows out of curiosity and a desire to protect his sister from anyone or anything that might want to harm her. Months pass before anything significant really happens, eventually learning the true nature of The Factory—that it's corrupt from the inside out and simply does anything it feels in its power to do. (The Factory also harbors supernaturals and tortures them into obedient service.) Coincidentally, Larus goes "missing" along with several others he'd become friends with though various means, and at the hands of Sun, he's turned.

It's slow—the torture. Many of the others are killed much faster, and time becomes meaningless in the dark of the room he's locked in. Sun insists on feeding him their blood, though his human body can't tolerate the taste or the consistency, and so, for a while, Larus starves. Fear isn't the true motivator here, clinging to the hope that his sister is still safe, and though most of Sun's victims are always murdered in the daylight, Larus dies in the dark with the flavor of blood in his mouth. It's what he comes to know for years afterward, purposely using his death as an escape so he can bring Sun and The Factory down through his own methods. The convenience that Egil brings when he relocates to the Dusk at his own father's insistence leaves him conflicted, and it's not until Jericho is assigned as Egil's bodyguard that Larus decides to finally make a move.

Larus fights to live. He fights for the people suffering under the tyranny of The Factory and the supernaturals who can't escape their heavy influence. In this manner, he meets Casimir – a human with the ability to read thoughts – one night at a church because of the strange deaths that have occurred within the Sea Snakes, and together, they form an odd relationship and their own crusade to put an end to the injustice that’s taken control of The Dusk. Several times, there are too many close calls with death to make Larus feel comfortable or safe, not that he ever has since his first death, but it’s one particular encounter with Sun that causes him to break.

PERSONALITY

» +/- practical / well-organized - Larus sees the use in everything, including people. He isn’t one to waste something he’s been given, and though it might lead to somewhat morally ambiguous or unethical situations, it isn’t really going to stop him from following through with whatever plan he’s put into action. This is why keeping things “just so” is important to him. He isn’t obsessive about organization, but there’s something immaculate about perfect details. This also makes him rather methodical in how he approaches situations and people.

» +analytical of situations - This stems back to his failure at not realizing that Sun was someone very bad. He doesn’t want to be caught in a situation like that ever again, so he watches and observes anyone and everything that crosses his path. Picking up on habits or smaller details might be something that helps him in the future, and he isn’t exactly the type of person to throw an opportunity away because he wasn’t prepared.

» + kind - Despite his cool and often aloof exterior, Larus isn’t callous. Deep down, he’s actually a very soft boy who wants love but won’t allow himself to have it. He’s not cruel and never will be because he doesn’t want to see parts those parts of Sun in himself or his actions.

» + hardworking - Just because he comes from money doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to earn what he has. After his death, he realized that he could never return home or risk putting his family (aka his sister) in danger, so he disappeared and began to build his own system and source of information to stop Sun. It might have originally began as revenge, but there’s nothing like having that particularly dark emotion as a motivator to get what you want.

» + puts (most) others first - Larus’ sense of self-preservation isn’t particular high on the scale of things that are necessary. So, if he was ever in a situation where he had to save someone he cared about, it would be them over himself. However, this can also be seen as a negative because in certain situations, he would simply let others die to save himself. A good (hypothetical) example of this would be his sister and some liaison he’s worked with a few times; his sister would immediately trump anyone else. As would Casimir. If he had to choose between Casimir and Sofie, it’s difficult to say who he’d choose, if he chose at all.

» + very loyal to others / his ideals - Once a person has become someone Larus trusts, his loyalty doesn’t waver at all. He’s more likely to befriend people who have similar goals in mind, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t entirely inflexible. If he feels their goals align with his in some way, then it’s safe to say he’s going to be around creeping on them and watching from the shadows.

» - worries too much - This could be a by-product of the fact he is meticulous when it comes to gathering information and watching everyone around him. Since he doesn’t allow many people into his personal circle, he often over-analyzes and wants others to do as he says so their safety becomes a higher priority. Of course, that would also help him focus more on the objective at hand, but it’s also a little backwards in thinking too.

» - values reason over feelings - His top negative trait, which could also be classified under detached (the word used above) or a fear of commitment. Larus doesn’t like to acknowledge that he has feelings at all, let alone that they’re there amid everything else he has going on. At first glance, he appears to be completely cut off and emotionless, but that is far from the truth. He just does his best to bury it and never acknowledge it because he doesn’t want his feelings towards others to be used against him or them in the future. If anything emotional or personal arises, he tries to make himself scarce so that he doesn’t have to deal with it. For as much as he’d rather take care of problems when they come up, he does his utmost best to avoid anything pertaining to him on a personal level.

» -/+ prefers not being the center of attention - The only real significance to this particular trait is that he’d rather be behind the scenes trying to learn as much as he can about whatever goal he’s set for himself at the time. Basically: he’s like a vampire ninja.

ABILITIES

Larus is a vampire, and this comes with a few "perks":

» heightened speed

» increased strength

» stronger sense of smell (than a human)

» increased hearing (mostly for that heartbeat)

A few things to note about the vampires in Larus’ canon: the bite is extremely addictive. The bite itself is painful at first, but after that initial pain, it’s nearly impossible to resist. Most humans who are bitten crave it again and again. However, humans can and have ignored wanting to be bitten, but the withdrawal is terrible, usually making the individual rather ill.
